I have been reading many books about women on the Frontier and the Westward Movement. Not much is said about their personal hygiene. What did these women do for protection when they menstruated?

I'm sure there were no sanitary pads back then!!

 

Most women simply used nothing. Maxi pads weren't developed until after WWI or II and what became pads began as bandages that women began using during war time. From there the concept was created and later tampons. So it wasn't only frontier women who dealt with this, but even women into the last century.
