Do women frequently go to jail for defending themselves against an abuser?

The short answer is yes -- some women do go to jail as a result of protecting themselves against an abuser. This is a problem that anti-domestic violence advocates have been working on by, one training judges when they are hearing these cases, training prosecutors, and working with the police to stop situations from escalating or to be able to identify what is really happening. You can learn more via the Family Violence Prevention Fund, www.fvpf.org.
