I am a freshman in college and writing a research paper focusing on why America is not ready for a female President when women have often been some of the greatest rulers in Europe. Could you please direct me to so sites and/or books that might help me explore this topic further. Thank you for your time. - Nicole

Thanks for your note to FEMINIST.COM. The simple or rather simplistic answer to why the U.S. isn't ready for a female President is basically that the U.S. is still much more sexist (and racist) than they/we want to let on. For instance, the extent that sexist jokes are still told and accepted. To find more concrete information about this you should look at The White House Project -- www.thewhitehouseproject.org. This is a public education campaign to promote the idea that a woman can run for President.

Also, you should reference the work of Kathleen Hull Jamison at the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Also, there is a program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University called Women Leaders Worldwide--initiated by a woman named Laura Liswood. They/she has looked at women leaders around the world. This will have good information for you to compare/contrast with.

I hope these suggestions help - good luck.
