RU486 FACES MORE OBSTACLES

June 30, 2000

WFF reported June 9 (below) that the Food and Drug Administration is preparing to approve the abortion drug RU486, but only with severe and unpredented restrictions. Even limited approval won't happen if Rep. Tom Coburn (R-OK) has his way. Coburn has tacked an amendment (H.Amdt.142) on to the Agriculture Appropriations bill (HR 1906) that would prohobit the FDA from testing, developing, or approving any drug that causes abortion. Planned Parenthood is coordinating a campaign to stop the Coburn Amendment, reported to be only 3 votes shy of passage. E-mail Reps directly from www.plannedparenthood.org/rchoices/lac/ or call them at 202-224-3121. (WFF 6/30/00)
