On May 10, 1996, the Foundation for a Compassionate Society sponsored a day long forum with the purpose of bringing women's voices into the debate about "family values."

More than 2000 women and men gathered for an afternoon community forum and an evening panel discussion that included:

  • Angela Davis, professor and author
  • Maria Jimenez, immigrant rights advocate with the National Commission for Democracy in Mexico
  • Gloria Steinem, author and women's rights activist
  • Mililani Trask, Native Hawaiian land rights leader and board member of the Indigenous Women's Network

Topics discussed during the forum included the environment and health, domestic violence, media, international militarism, nuclear waste, alternative health care, arts activism, student activism, and lesbian and gay rights. The event was profound, historic, motivating, and inspiring.

    Quotes from the Panelists:

"For many Latin American women, the struggle to assert their rights and dignity as women is an integral part of the liberation of all peoples."
    - Maria Jimenez

"I suggest that we declare the last five-to-ten thousand years an experiment that failed. Let's declare this the first meeting of the post-patriarchal, post-racist, post-nationalistic age."
    - Gloria Steinem

"We all have a common goal; we know this in our hearts--to make a more compassionate society for our children, for our sons and daughters, for future generations; a more compassionate society for the earth."
    - Mililani Trask

"I want to suggest that particularly at this time in the history of our country and the history of the globe, radical activism is needed more than ever before and that women and women's issues need to be at the forefront in this radical activism."
    - Angela Davis
