Feminism

My name is Katie and I am a sophmore at Clovis High School, in Clovis, California. As part of our classroom curriculum, all students were assigned to do a persuasive paper of a topic of their choice. Feminism and feminist beliefs have been an interest of mine for some time, so, of course, I chose this topic. As part of this research paper, we were asked to contact and interview an expert on our topic. So, nonetheless, I decided to contact your experts at FEMINIST.COM. I would greatly appreciate if you'd help me out by answering the following brief questions about Feminism, Thank you, thank you, thank you! Sincerly, Katie

1.) What are the goals of modern feminists?
2.) Where do men fit-in in the feminist lifestyle?
3.) How is the "third-wave" of feminism affecting society?
4.) What can younger generations do to promote and continue active feminism?
5.) What are active feminist groups doing to pass the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment)?
6.) When will the feminist "fight" be over?

Thanks for your note to FEMINIST.COM. Here's my attempt to answer your questions:

1.) What are the goals of modern feminists?
The main goal is equality, which will only come both through legal standing and a change of consciousness.

2.) Where do men fit-in in the feminist lifestyle?
Because feminism is about equality--it equally involves men. In fact it benefits men as much as it benefits women--it frees each of us from stereotypes and lets us be individuals. It places the value on us, not on our gender. Feminism needs more men to be active in feminism. For example, it's more effective when a white person says "that's not funny" to a racist joke, just as it is more effective for men to say "how can I combine my career with childrearing."

3.) How is the "third-wave" of feminism affecting society?
The Third Wave is in the words of Marie Wilson (president of the Ms. Foundation for Women) "hurrying history." We are trying to push it along--and scream louder so we can get to equality sooner. Because we grew up in a different time/era, we are there to add perspective.

4.) What can younger generations do to promote and continue active feminism?
Be who you want to be--and help others to do the same.

5.) What are active feminist groups doing to pass the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment)?
I don't know--I think they are trying to do it at the state level--such as Iowa did in this past election year.

6.) When will the feminist "fight" be over?
When each person--regardless of race, gender, ability, etc... is exactly who he/she wants to be. Also, it won't only be about women being in "men's roles" and vice versa, but doing away with roles all together.
