Feminist.com at a Crossroads

Dear Feminist.com Supporter,

I rarely write or communicate about the day-to-day efforts taken to ensure that Feminist.com serves the needs of its audience. But in the last year, I have become more aware of the important role Feminist.com plays on issues of increasing importance on the global stage. Therefore I need to let you know of Feminist.com's journey and present difficult situation.

For the past several years, Feminist.com has been operating on less than $20,000 a year of income from donations, membership fees, sponsorships and grants. We struggle each year to cover all of the necessary operating expenses that come along with running a website and non-profit organization. Yet, despite this extremely restrictive and insufficient operating budget, we continue to work tirelessly on the site and provide our services, through the unpaid work of myself as Feminist.com's main editor and Executive Director, and a wonderful team of volunteers who give generously of their time, insight and creative ideas. We simply do the best we can fueled solely by our commitment to our mission and the causes we represent.

During these last few years, I have felt an increasing pressure to fulfill the growing demand for our services - from our visitors and from the organizations and causes we support. Not surprisingly, this has occurred at the same time that the issues we address have taken a central focus in the media and on the world stage. There has been growing awareness that changing the lives of women and girls for the better has the potential to change all people's lives in a positive way and is connected to the many critical challenges facing our world: socioeconomic issues, the environment, peace and security - and our interdependence with each other. Feminist.com provides many unique and important services around these issues: as a hub of information, a destination for resources and networking, a platform for important non-profit organizations to promote their issues and campaigns, and a lifeline to people around the world, who use our site anonymously, or reach out personally through Ask Amy for help, support and advice. We also work hard to reflect a vision of feminism that is inclusive - of varied viewpoints, ages, experiences, beliefs and cultures. And the scope of our work has evolved hand-in-hand with a modern-day reality in which people now use the Internet as their primary source of news, information and community.

As the issues we highlight at our site become increasingly vital, so will the demands on - and enormous potential of - Feminist.com. In order to meet those needs, we must rely on greater financial participation from the audience we serve, those of you who use and enjoy Feminist.com, so that we can continue to maintain our site, as well as allow it to grow and evolve. We have been planning many exciting projects and enhancements that we are hoping to offer to you.

Our site is at a crossroads. It is clear that our work now requires a greater effort than I or my volunteers can put out. We are here for you, and we need you to be here for us.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and continued support of Feminist.com.
